Q: Do I have to order reprints through you?

A: Not at all. You will get your images burned onto a set of DVDs, which you can then take to any photo store you like to make prints. In addition, I upload the images to Pictage, a commercial site for professional wedding photographers, and you're able to order top-quality prints directly from them. As a professional, I take great pride in my images and naturally recommend that you get your prints from high-end labs that use archival ink and higher-quality papers.

Q: What does it mean to own my image rights?

A: It means that you can make reprints to your heart's content, so long as you're not using them for marketing or other money-making purposes. (As I tell clients, don't slap them on a billboard, but feel free to pass them out to friends.) You are not, however, permitted to resell the images or upload to other commercial galleries without written approval.

Q: What do I pay you upon hiring?

A: I ask for a $500 non-refundable booking fee, which is applied toward the final cost of whatever package you select.

Q: Why is there a booking fee?

A: Once you’ve booked me, I turn down inquiries for your wedding day. The retainer, or booking fee, is to ensure that you take your commitment to me as seriously as I’m taking my commitment to you.

Q: How many photos will I get?

A: That depends on a number of factors, such as whether you've chosen a package that includes a secondary photographer (which naturally leads to more pictures) and whether your day includes photo-friendly traditions (think: cutting the cake or sharing the first dance). Regardless, you'll get hundreds.

Q: How much time should I allot for portraits?

A: This depends largely on the emphasis you want to give portraits. Some couples want mostly candid shots of the day, so they schedule less time after the ceremony for staged photos. Others have large extended families that really could require an hour or more to properly coordinate. As a general rule of thumb, anticipate that each portrait configuration you request will take 3-5 minutes. Thus, if you have 20 setups you know you’d like, plan on that taking at least one hour.

Q: Do you have references?

A: Absolutely. They're available on request.

Q: I'm interested, so what do I do next?

A: E-mail me to set up a time to chat by phone. This initial communication will be a way for you to hear my voice and begin to gauge my personality to determine whether I seem to be a good fit for you and your significant other. I consider photographs the second most-important aspect of your wedding day – right after the vows themselves – so it's important to me that we connect. When we talk, we can also set up a time to meet in person.

Aaaaaand we're back!
2015-01-09 13:32:38
I can't tell you how excited I am to write this sentence: Elijah and I are returning to the wedding world!

We didn't disappear completely, of course, but we've moved around so much in the past few years that focusing on photography as a business wasn't really possible. In the past three years, we've moved four times, with one of the journeys taking us away from South Dakota and to Cincinnati, our current home. We would have started up A (plus) E Photography straight away, but I was six months pregnant during that move, and by the time we settled, as big as a house and tired all of the time. Oh, and I had two books to write. (A link to the latest, "The Kennedy Wives: Triumph and Tragedy in America's Most Public Family," is below.)

Now, our (undeniably super cute - photos attached) son is 1 and both of my books have been released, so here we are, ready and eager to shoot. We're launching some ads to let Cincinnati know we exist here, and we might hit up some past clients for referrals so people know we're legit. Our goal is to take six or so weddings a year - enough to keep us busy without being too overwhelming with a little one at home.

As always, we're available for travel, so don't let our locale keep you from reaching out. We've made such great friends shooting weddings that we're very excited to get going again! We can't wait to hear from new people.

Note: Special thanks to Leigh Patton Taylor, a fantastic photographer who recently left The Enquirer, for the three family photos at the start. The remaining portraits were shot by Elijah or me.

Chris and Katelyn: So Engaging
2012-12-03 00:11:02
Instead of Black Friday shopping, we spent the day after Thanksgiving shooting the engagement photos for Chris and Katelyn. We're 100% sure we had more fun this way.

The shoot began at the historic Dawn Theatre in Chris's hometown of Hillsdale, Michigan and wrapped up with some tremendous shots at the nearby train tracks. With such stunning models and beautiful locations, we're thrilled with how the shoot turned out!

Been a while ...

It's now November 2012, and Amber and I are finally feeling settled in South Dakota. The year here has been fascinating, taking us to parts of the country we'd never really knew existed. Attached are just two recent images from a trip to northern South Dakota.

Now that we're settled, we're going to officially re-launch the wedding photography business. We're really excited about it. We've missed the fun of being part of people's big day. So if you're in South Dakota or know someone who is, spread the word! Advertising to begin shortly.

As we've been settling in across the country in South Dakota, Elijah has kept up with our portrait series on the ever-growing, always-adorable Calan. Here's his fourth installment at the 9-month-mark.

Elijah again visited Michigan to spend time with adorable Calan. The smiles are coming faster. The personality is clearly developing. This kid is such a sweetie.
